The start of a frostbite race and the beginning of EYC
March 1933, Walter Rowe organized a regatta in Essex off of the old Steamboat Dock as a neutral meeting ground for the Inaugural Eastern Frostbite Dinghy Regatta, hosting rival frostbite fleets from New England and New York. By later that spring a cruising headquarters in Essex was needed. On May 27, the Essex Yacht Club was founded. The Steamboat Dock was leased and the the EYC was commissioned on June 17th, 1933. Walter Rowe was the first elected Commodore. Ninety years later the EYC thrives boasting an active membership that is engaged and committed to its heritage of promoting excellence in yachting activities, the Corinthian spirit and camaraderie among its members.
