USCG seeks comment on removal
to Aids to Navigation

Sailors,
While we know that most of you are busy getting ready for the beginning of the long-awaited cruising season, we thought that you should be aware of an initiative by the US Coast Guard to remove hundreds of navigational aids from the Northeast Coast as a cost saving measure.

Here is a good explanation and chart of which buoys are subject to removal: CLICK HERE

There is currently an ongoing Comment Period that ends June 13, 2025, and it is recommended that your comment include your observations and concerns regarding specific markers. Also, please include the type and size of your vessel (recreational or commercial) and how the aid supports your navigation. The email address for Comments is: [email protected].

For many of us, these buoys are front line tools for mariner safety, particularly in complex waterways like coastal Maine. We should all ask the Coast Guard to carefully weigh the broader safety implications before making changes that could unintentionally increase risk. Any statement will help.

Best Regards for a happy sailing season!
